A simple tool for bulk adding/updating/removing tags from AWS resources.

The ultimate goal is to support all taggable AWS resources, but initially targetting commonly used and "billable" resources.

Primary benefits over AWS web console or command line tool are:

  • No clicking 237 (or 732) checkboxes
  • Scriptable
  • Simple selectors
  • Simple tag specification

Installation

Binary

Grab the latest release here. Extract it and put awstagger somewhere on your path.

From source

Install and set up Go

Homebrew

...coming soon to a Mac near you

Examples

To simply list the tags on all resources in all regions:

awstagger --verbose

To list the tags on all resources in some regions:

awstagger --verbose --region us-east-1 --region us-west-2

To add tags on all resources in a region:

awstagger --region us-east-1 --tag key1=value1 --tag key2=value2

To remove tags on all resources in a region:

awstagger --region us-east-1 --rm-tag key3 --rm-tag key4

Do it all in one run:

awstagger --verbose --region us-east-1 --tag key1=value1 --tag key2=value2 --rm-tag key3 --rm-tag key4

Why Go

I initially built similar functionality in Scala as part of my day job (hence, not public). But in choosing Scala (or any JVM language for that matter), I limited the usefulness to those people that had a ready JVM. At my day job, this wasn't a significant factor, but upon considering wider usability, requiring a JVM was a serious downside. Along those same lines, while more generally available, requiring a Python or Ruby environment with the requisite eggs/gems/etc. was equally confining. I think the standalone, statically-linked nature of Go binaries is it's most compelling feature in terms of command line tools.

Apologies

This my first attempt at doing anything with Go. I'm sure I bungled all kinds of things. If you see something stupid, please tell me why it's stupid and how it should be done.
